JCI USA Fights Malaria Coast-to-Coast

bbJCI USA recently completed cross-country fundraising, awareness building, and advocacy tour in support of Nothing But Nets, a grassroots movement to prevent malaria through the distribution of insecticide-treated bed nets to needy families in Sub-Saharan Africa.

In partnership with Nothing But Nets and the United Nations Foundation, Immediate JCI USA Past President Chrystal Ramsay-Dyess and current President Fay Poissant, travelled from coast-to-coast with other volunteers on the “JCI – Bzzz Tour 2.0” to organize over 40 in-district community meetings, and almost 90 local Jaycee chapter meetings. The group worked with chapters in 16 states to promote advocacy of Nothing But Nets, sharing the Nothing But Nets story and empowering members and community leaders to advocate on behalf of Nothing But Nets to their government representatives.

The 16-State tour culminated with a visit to Capitol Hill for meetings with the co-chairs of the Congressional Malaria and Neglected Tropical Diseases Caucus (NTDs) and other elected officials to discuss the impact of malaria on women and children in Africa.

We were able to host 12 meetings in a day and a half. It was productive, constructive and amazing. I cannot put into words what a wonderful experience the JCI BzzzTour was for our organization. We had the opportunity to talk with the staff of governmental leaders about the importance of being global active citizens and continuing to work together to combat malaria.”

Nothing But Nets was founded in 2006 to raise global awareness and funding to fight malaria, a leading cause of death among children in Africa. Over the years, the campaign has engaged hundreds of thousands of individuals to help achieve the UN goal of ending malaria deaths in this generation. The organization works with a diverse group of partners, including the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, the National Basketball Association’s NBA Cares, and Junior Chamber International, among others.

Congratulations to Presidents Chrystal Ramsay-Dyess and Fay Poissant, along with numerous other Jaycees for their hard work and dedication in helping to combat this terrible disease.
